The Best Flooring for Underfloor Heating

Underfloor heating has become increasingly popular in recent years, particularly in extensions, new-build homes, kitchen renovations and open-plan living spaces.

One of the most common questions we're asked is whether certain types of flooring work better than others with underfloor heating.

The good news is that most modern flooring products can be used successfully with underfloor heating when the correct products are chosen and installed properly.

In this guide, we'll explain the best flooring options for underfloor heating and what you should consider before making your choice.

How Does Underfloor Heating Affect Flooring?

Unlike traditional radiators, underfloor heating works by gently warming the floor surface, which then radiates heat throughout the room.

For the system to work efficiently, heat needs to pass through the flooring as easily as possible.

This means that the type of flooring, underlay and installation method can all have an impact on how efficiently your heating system performs.

Whether you have a wet underfloor heating system or an electric underfloor heating system, the same principles generally apply – choosing suitable flooring products and ensuring they are installed correctly.

Is Carpet Suitable for Underfloor Heating?

Absolutely.

One of the biggest misconceptions we encounter is that carpet cannot be used with underfloor heating. In reality, many carpets work extremely well with modern heating systems.

The key consideration is the combined tog rating of the carpet and underlay.

Understanding Tog Ratings

A tog rating measures how much a product resists heat transfer.

The higher the tog rating, the more insulation the flooring provides. While this can make a room feel warm and comfortable, it can also reduce the efficiency of an underfloor heating system.

Most underfloor heating manufacturers recommend that the combined tog value of the carpet and underlay does not exceed 2.5 tog, although it's always worth checking the specific requirements of your heating system.

When choosing carpet for underfloor heating, both the carpet and underlay need to be considered together.

Choosing the Right Underlay

The underlay is just as important as the carpet itself.

Many standard underlays are designed to maximise insulation, which can restrict heat transfer from the heating system below.

For underfloor heating installations, specialist underlays are available that are specifically designed to allow heat to pass through more efficiently. Many of these feature a perforated design, helping warmth travel through the flooring more effectively whilst still providing comfort underfoot.

Choosing the correct underlay can make a significant difference to the overall performance of your heating system.

What Types of Carpet Work Best?

Many modern carpets are suitable for underfloor heating, including both wool and synthetic options. if you visit either our Malton or Scarborough store they will be able to go through which ranges will work best.

The important factor is not whether the carpet is wool or synthetic, but whether the overall tog rating remains within the limits recommended by the heating manufacturer.

When selecting carpet for underfloor heating, we'll always check the suitability of both the carpet and underlay to ensure the system can perform efficiently.

Is LVT Suitable for Underfloor Heating?

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) is one of the most popular flooring choices for homes with underfloor heating.

LVT conducts heat efficiently, feels comfortable underfoot and performs exceptionally well in kitchens, dining rooms, hallways and open-plan living spaces.

Both glue-down and click LVT products can be suitable for underfloor heating when installed correctly and within the manufacturer's guidelines.

Glue-Down LVT and Underfloor Heating

Glue-down LVT is often considered one of the best flooring choices for underfloor heating systems.

Because the flooring is fitted directly to the prepared subfloor, there is very little material between the heating system and the finished floor surface.

Specialist high-temperature adhesives are available specifically for use with underfloor heating systems, helping to ensure the flooring remains secure and stable as temperatures fluctuate throughout the year.

This combination of stability, durability and heat transfer is one of the reasons glue-down LVT is such a popular choice for modern homes.

Can I Fit Laminate Over Underfloor Heating?

Many laminate floors can also be used with underfloor heating systems, provided the product has been approved by the manufacturer.

As with all flooring types, it's important to check the specific product specifications before installation.

Modern laminate flooring can perform very well with underfloor heating when the correct products and underlays are selected.

As laminate is installed as a floating floor, an expansion gap must always be left around the perimeter of the room. This allows the flooring to naturally expand and contract as temperatures change. Failure to leave adequate expansion gaps can lead to lifting, buckling or damage to the floor.

This is particularly important in homes with underfloor heating, where the flooring will experience more regular temperature changes throughout the year.

Can Vinyl Flooring Be Used with Underfloor Heating?

Sheet vinyl flooring is often suitable for underfloor heating and is commonly used in kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms.

As always, it's important to check the manufacturer's recommendations regarding maximum floor temperatures and installation requirements.

Temperature Limits and Commissioning

Most flooring manufacturers specify a maximum floor temperature of around 27°C when used with underfloor heating systems, although this can vary between products and manufacturers.

This limit is designed to protect both the flooring and the heating system, helping to prevent excessive expansion, contraction or damage over time.

It's also important that underfloor heating is commissioned correctly following installation.

Rather than turning the system straight up to its maximum temperature immediately after the flooring has been fitted, the heating should be brought up gradually over a number of days in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations.

This allows the flooring, adhesives and subfloor to acclimatise properly and helps minimise unnecessary stress on the installation.

Why Professional Advice Matters

When it comes to underfloor heating, every element of the floor build-up matters.

The flooring, underlay, adhesive, subfloor preparation and heating system all need to work together to achieve the best results.

Choosing the wrong combination of products can reduce heating efficiency, affect comfort levels and, in some cases, invalidate manufacturer warranties.

That's why we always recommend discussing your underfloor heating system at the start of the project so the most suitable flooring products can be selected.

Our Recommendations

There is no single "best" flooring for underfloor heating, but some products naturally lend themselves particularly well to these systems.

For hard flooring, glue-down LVT is often one of the best choices thanks to its excellent heat transfer, stability and durability.

For customers who prefer carpet, there are plenty of suitable options available, provided the correct carpet and underlay combination is chosen.

The most important thing is ensuring that the flooring, underlay, adhesive and installation method are all suitable for your particular heating system. It's equally important that the system is commissioned correctly after installation and operated within the temperature limits specified by the flooring manufacturer.
